Notes From Nature Talk
either those labels are labels for ants, or that is something straight out of a 1950s horror film 😉
Thanks TraciLee 😃 (now, if someone could go into the collection and check the back of every D. H. Janzen label 😉 )
The previous person answered that they thought of it as something that might be useful information.
How can you be so absolutely certain?
#day obscured by pin. 13? 15? 19?
Also, this is my bug number 1000 😃
#time 14:30-14:59
I dont think there's a directive, no. Is it bugging you that much? 😉 youve asked others this question too (so clearly Im not the only one)
#time 06:00-07:40
is the month a badly written 4 or a badly written 8? Im going for 4.
#paratype
#time 10:00-10:29
That's P. D. Hurd... when you've done a few of these, you'll recognise the more frequent collectors 😉
Gustav Eisen lived 1847-1940, so that would have to be 1893 then.
I've come across another one now from seemingly the same trip, and that one definitely says V: ANN00007wx
no #collector and no #locality more specific than county.
#error #moderator
#time 06:00-07:30
maybe a #moderator could have a look at it
the person who placed the pin decided rather brilliantly to stick it through the cardinal point. I entered it as "2.5 mi. ? Mazatlan"
Is "californicus" stricken out, or is it just badly aligned underlining?
there's a gap in the #date range. Had to enter 19-27, although it seems 20-23 should not be part of it.
#date on the back of the label again
no #collector (there seems to be something written on the back of the label, which may be the collector, but it is impossible to make out)
no #collector. It is possibly hiding under that huge det label.
May 19, but yeah that year is a tricky one
Wash for Washington perhaps.
1962 you mean 😉
VIII-25-something, I believe. Definitely VIII at least. If you right-click on it, you can open the image, which gives you the original size
I would put that in the host.
...1940, I dont know if it's before or after he changed conventions.
Tricky. MacSwain used numbers for the months in the 30s at least, but then at some point he started using roman numerals. This being...
#error
jesus, that looks terrifyingly huge
no #locality more specific than county.
#time 07:45-08:15

#unclear month
I cant get this image to load for some reason? Is it just me, or?

That isnt the same as saying "please make guesses to what every abbreviation means"
The only thing theyve instructed us to search for is missing locality info. For example if country or county isnt on the label
I can make out Calif. and Sonoma Co., but what is the first word? #unclear
the info as it was written on the label. We're transcribers, not editors.
with what was on the label, so they can draw their own conclusions. If we do it for them, it may in some cases be wrong and they dont see
Im not saying it is wrong in this case, nor did I think I was being harsh; I was speaking generally. We should present researchers/scientist
uses your wrongly interpreted info, rather than being given the label as is and the chance to interpret it themselves.
I disagree. Find out for your own amusement, by all means, but enter what is on the label. What if your deducing is wrong, and then someone
...Iltis is is irrelevant.
This is a mightily odd plant, wouldnt you say? It's not Iltis, it's Otis; on other labels it is clearer. Whoever this plant collecting...
Just put the info as is, bjornbjorn. We shouldnt engage in (possibly wrongful) speculation and interpretation, IMHO.
I dont think so darryl
not much info here
very often it will be just the species name, without "ex" or whatever, for example "Helianthus annuus"
That's not a backwards e, just a poorly inked e 😉
certainly looks like 52 to me too
typo/misspelling for Russelmann, which is in Contra Costa county.
What do you mean? Teton is indeed listed under Wyoming.. are you sure you entered the correct State?

Janzen!! shakes fist
Day is a bit unclear, but I think it's supposed to be a 4.
I used the same reasoning and entered 2012 😉
"See collecting notes of L. J. Orsak (LJO-104)"
last digit of #year cut off.
1912 or 2012?
This one, too, clearly has something (most likely the date) written on the back, but this one is too faint to make readable with PS trickery
There was no "front and back" image of the label in the transcription images for those specimens
that, in my experience, is not true cerabilia. I have encountered Janzen labels with dates on back that I made readable in PS
There's a "Russelmann Park Road" in Clayton in Contra Costa county.
Usually they can be made out by fiddling and flipping it around in photoshop, but this one is just too faint (for me at least).
As with a lot of Janzen's labels (Janzen!! shakes fist), the date is written on the back.
Corner of Euclid (ave.) and Market (street), San Diego possibly.
Reading the help texts helps 😉
#time 13:30-13:59
Im starting to think that J. Powell is a vampyre that has lived forever. About 60 years worth of specimens. Impressive.
A Janzen label with all the info on the same side? can it really be? 😉
#time 08:30-08:59
1966?
(luckily he learned to write more proper labels later on)
yes, the MacSwain labels from the '30s are all like this, and on some it is evident he wrote month before day.
Yeah, the C in Costa Rica will be the left-most on that label, and the others are directly underneath it, so theres not anything missing.
Someone needs to unfold that label and retake the photo (in case the reason for my outburst wasnt clear 😉 )
Janzen!!! shakes fist
Hacienda?
or Camp. Not that it matters; just enter it as it stands, I dont think we're meant to work out the abbreviations (and possibly get it wrong)
the date is on the back: 7-7-1956 (or possibly 1936?). See http://postimg.org/image/nn8d9xubl/
#error no #info
not sure if the first initial of the collector is supposed to be I or J
#unclear #year 68 or 63
Looks like he added an extra I to the month to make it VIII?
#time 07:00-07:29
(L.) Torr. is what google has at least.
State misspelled
#year unclear. 40-something.
#locality? Peru? There are two different Lagunas districts in Peru.
Pinnacles stretches over two counties, so #county is uncertain
What's that location?
I would have thought that would go in the "host" field?
That seems to be a place in Albemarly county, so I would say yes.
year is either 37 or 57. I put 37.
#unclear year, either 47 or 49; I put 49
label with #collector and presumably more precise #locality is outside of shot (can just see edge of it)
no #collector no #locality other than state and county.
Locality is state of San Luis Potosi in Mexico. Possibly Tamazunchale, it is a bit tricky to make out: http://postimg.org/image/b3i0a7vpv/
Probably 1898. Botanist H. Lugger is mentioned in the "14th annual report of the Kentucky Agricultural Experiment Station" from 1901.
Probably on the same trip as ANN0000isy which has 7-27-1956
I dont know about the cordoba thing, but the date seems to be something like 7-25-1956: http://postimg.org/image/51h7yswvl/
Part of the bug's body has broken off and is obscuring part of the #label
11:30-11:59
but I'll but Durango as the label suggests
so I dont think 14 miles would get you there
Label says "Dgo." (Durango), but google says El Salto Canyon is in Nuevo Leon, and to get to Durango youd have to go through another state
the #date is confusing me: it seems to say "May. 192 51"??
17:00-17:29
Looks to me like IX-15-1963
Here you can see for yourself: http://postimg.org/image/kvusa3bkn/
(continued) that it is from Cordoba in the state of Veracruz in Mexico.
Unfortunately, Janzen has the annoying habit of writing the date on the back of his labels. Flipping the image around reveals (cont.)
As opposed to following any roads or trails, which would almost certainly come out to a different distance.
It says Douglas, Arizona, which is in Cochise County.
It is possible, but not certain. All it says is that Telford determined the species of the specimen. It says nothing about #collector
Seeing as months are roman numerals, that would make this May 1 1976, no?
no #date or #collector (there seems to be something written on the back of the label though).
#incomplete #error it seems the label with the locality and date information is missing; only host and collector are present
It's Fuirena scirpoidea, but I cant make out the last word. The authority is Michaux, and I cant get that to fit with the last word.
http://postimg.org/image/9wbyyezo3/ The year looks like it's 1956, the month looks like it's 7. The day looks like it's 19 or maybe 14?
It's on the back of the label.
Thank you kindly 😃
I cant make out the name of the canyon. Anyone?
I entered the name of the Parish in the State/Province field.
no #location other than county
Yeah, I did enter that part, but what about the part that says "Yaani Wells"?
thanks Kevyn, but I already posted a discussion topic related to this specimen where I did exactly the same thing 😉
#collector label is #obscured by location label (looks like it might be J. Powell)
Dammit Janzen, stop writing the #date on the back of your labels!
Yaani Wells?? I get no google hits on that.
The desert spans three counties, and the label doesnt specify which county this is from.
I dont know what "at lites" means.
Roman numerals for both month and day here, but Im assuming 11 was meant, rather than II
Laguna misspelled "Lagua" on label.
According to Wikipedia, there's a Pinecrest in both Nevada county and Tuolumne county, so I don't know which one this is.
not sure if it's 66 or 68. I think 66.
#State misspelled Chiapis.
Unsure of #date
Not entirely sure, but I think the #collector name is H. Otis? Also, I assume the 96 here means 1896 rather than 1996.
unclear #year I think it's supposed to be 51
Time: 09:30-09:59
The time of day is also given: 13:30-13:59
edit: oops, I see someone already mentioned this
#year is somewhat #unclear but I think it says 43.
No #date no #collector
Unsure if year is 54 or 59. Put down 54.

No #collector
No collector.
No collector name present.
I went with the name of the Canton for the county field (those fields should be refined a bit for countries like Mexico, C.R., etc.)
Month before day assumed.
Label says simply "Warner's". I dont know if this is the locality, but I entered it as such. Possibly Warner Springs?
Date ambiguous. Month before day assumed.
No date present.
Im unsure of the month.
Ambiguous date, but Im assuming day before month.
Help text clearly says that the month will often be in Roman numerals.
Additional label says "0830-0859". Probably time of day.
Additional label says "black light trap" (presumably method of capture)
A couple extra labels: "det. A. D. Telford" and "♂ Genetalia extended"
Not sure if the day is 8 or 18 (there seems to be a stain that may be obscuring a 1)
No collector name, but there's a number which I dont know what means: 9761
Handwritten note says "10 mi." while printed label says "9 mi." Also, handwritten note has the day as 8 while printed label has 7/9.
additional label: "det. R. D. Ward, 1987".
This has an additional label, that says "det. W. D. Sumlin 1974"
