Notes From Nature Talk
C. M. Dammers
8 miles W. of ?? Cal. Looks like Kavi Spr. but I don't think that's it. The collector is Timberlake
D. Cox
High five to you too, plant.
Such a lucky damsel.
Poison Lake. Yikes.
The only other thing I could think of is that it shared a container with a fuzzy companion who shared some fuzz.
I forgot to mark my 1000th bug, who was a fuzzy bee from Guadalajara. This is my 1001th bug.
The white, feathery material on this one seems kind of odd.
Yup.
The specimen is actually inside the paper pouch. See joanball's response on ANN0002de7
It appears we're not the first transcribers to be unsure about the year.
Having a size contest with ANN0001g8a
Grats, Pict.
Hah. I guess he did whatever he felt was necessary.
Even though the search is "gardiner wyoming" all of the results point to Gardiner being in MT. There is no Gardiner, WY.
Does it mean San Felipe somewhere in California or San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico? All I know for sure about this one is the date.
Is it? The coordinates I got from a Wikipedia article pinpointed the location along the river in Montana. http://tinyurl.com/k783yeb
Tag says WYO but between Knowles Falls and Gardiner is in Montana, just north of Wyoming.
Calif San Bernardino 8 mi E Cajon. So California, San Bernardino county 8 miles east of Cajon.
That's an L for Luling
You can actually see some of the individual lenses of the compound eyes. Pretty good photo.
Suddenly, a flash of blue!
Not sure on collector. Can't find anyone named P. McMillin or McMullin anywhere else. There's a McMillan in the Essig database.
Note: Metlac
Also, "Asleep in its burrow" wow, entomologists are jerks. 😉
Note: Brentwood Lodge most likely no longer exists or was renamed.
Note: Borrego
#toosmall #frustration
I swear that is a K behind that pin. Norman Frazier became Norman Krazier.
I think south of Inyo Co. line was meant to be north instead. Mono is north of Inyo.
#uncleardate ehhhhh not gonna bet on ever guessing this one correctly
Interesting butterfly.
It's in the lower right. I see some mandibles and a couple of wings.
Nice and in focus.
And cuddly. Look at that fuzz. Say, is that mold?
Bottom left is elevation: 3200ft
I started reading about cuckoo wasps and have learned that they curl up in a ball when disturbed. I think this one is doing that.
#retakephoto-unclear Another zoom happy photo
Note: Hurkey
Collector is almost invisible under TAHOE: C. H. Kennedy
Note: Mezquital
Just off the frame, perhaps.
The instructions didn't preclude us from doing so, either. Your opinion is that it's harmful to the project. I disagree. It's helpful.
Note: Rush. Biv should be Rush. Riv; stands for Rushing River Provincial Park
Nice. Red and furry. The carpet matches the drapes.
Sounds like it was reared from the cocoon in 1957 and was not an adult until 1959? Longer life than I would have guessed.
Typo - Currant Creek is spelled with an a
From Strawberry to Peanut. Peanut butter and Strawberry jam could be the official food of Calbug transcribers.
Funny story, I was looking up Peanut in Trinity Co. when the familiar pattern from this label clicked together in my mind.
Ah, I think the word is Triniti.
I'm partial to the pom pom butt and stylish white wing tassels.
...I think this may be a case where we must agree to disagree. I do see your point, however, Pict!
Respectfully, Pict, they've instructed us to search for and elaborate on vague localities. I'm sure they're aware of our fallibility.
Nice butterfly.
Thanks, Darryl.
You can safely ignore all of those. There is nowhere to record any of them.
Couldn't find a Troj. Venezuela, but there is an Agua Viva in Trujillo. Went with that.
If anyone knows what T2N R6W S16 means, I would be interested in knowing for future reference.
I can only find Charles H. Otis, a botanist. Doesn't seem a good fit.
Ok, maybe it is from 1896? Anyone know an entomologist named H. Otis?
FYI, Mention of a Falls Public Camp in San Bernardino County: http://newspaperarchive.com/press-telegram/1959-03-26/page-32
I did search. Public Camp seems the most likely. This is a group project and if you have another idea about Pub. Cp, share it.
Pinon Flat. Looked it up and it seems to be known better as either Piñon or Pinyon flat. Same pronunciation either way.
Oakland Hills. 1905? 2005? Hmm.
Maybe Carson Valley, NV
Ah! THREE. I can't believe how obvious that word seems now after agonizing over it for a good half hour and getting nowhere.
#collector G. F. ? Could be First and Last initial or First and Middle, interrupted before writing the last name.
It looks more like "[Something] Ridge, Hollow. Nelson Co." to me. Not sure if that's helpful.
Can't find any Big Creek Reservoir (or Reserve, or Reservation) in CA. Can't find Highlands Road (South or not) either.
Finally, a host that's another animal. There should be a badge for finding one.
in cracks / in mud / Brachinus sp. ...entomologist poetry? 😉
VII-14-84? Howell would have been 81. Unsure on the year.
Or not. I am seeing more of them now.
This is atypical.
I don't think there's anything wrong with reasonable speculation. Part of the fun of this project is figuring out some of the puzzles.
Doh! Well, I got that one wrong, then. Thanks for finding the collector for me. I could only make out H. tis, and couldn't find a match.
Public Camp
I suppose this is from 1896 given the yellowing paper, fading ink, and style of the label. Bug is in nice shape for its age.
Northeast Reserve. Two years later, it was renamed to McAllister Park. http://www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/directory_mcallister.aspx
Alpine. Could mean any of these: Alpine, CA; Alpine County; Alpine Lake ... Going with Alpine Lake
Blanco's Corral. Popular location for collection bugs. But what is Blanco's Corral, exactly?
Bethel Tract. It is presently known as Bethel Island.
locality typo: Goldthwaite
Good to know. I was feeling a little pedantic but since you say it helps I'll keep making little notes of things.
Looking at this again, I think the full text might be: "David Peterson 3500 ft on hwy 60 down from sta ana oat pk. calif. "
I have seen Playas del Coco a couple of times now lacking the "s" at the end of Playas.
Unsure on this one. The label looks like one of those really old ones, though! 1914? No collector.
Pyr. Pyramid? A bug picked up from a pyramid in Teotihuacan? I want to be a collector.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaise_trap Irrelevant as far as transcribing goes. Just ignore it.
#handwriting Best I can do: David Peterson 3500 ft on hwy 60 down from ??? oat pk. Calif.
#handwriting #uncleardate I went with VIII / 12 1955
Maybe someone should put the specimen back on the pin.
Thanks. I'll have to bookmark that.
Oh, Soyalo!
Some context would help with some of these illegible writings. The next specimen in the group could have the same year.
Ah, ty. I'll know for the future.
Note: Typo in Monterey
#unclearlocation Probably Chiapas, Mexico. Could not find any towns or locations named Sovald or similar
#collector Faded ink. N. ?. Hardman
#unclearabbreviation V. Molino Basin. V?
Typo in Chuchupate
#uncleardate #handwriting a typed 9 corrected to an 8 with an ink pen
The pop-up doesn't give many examples for how ranged dates are usually formatted. This is the first time I've seen a comma used.
Oh, yeah, it does look like 51 if you read the 5 has having a really long bar.
Looks kind of like a 3 was underneath and corrected to ...something. 55 seems right, though.
Strange date format. Assuming a date range of Oct. 14 - Oct. 23 in the year 1986
#unclearlocation S??U Canyon O.? FMDR
Still here, still nothing.
I suppose one is male and the other is female.
Decapitated insect. I feel sorry for it! Also, collector's name has a backwards e? I also entered "10"
Sonora Pass is in both California and Nevada. I chose California
I think all files receive redundant submissions to reduce the chance of errors. I wonder how many each gets before being considered done?
#uncleardate 1950 assumed... if only they knew we'd be transcribing them decades later
#uncleardate Think the year is 52 but there is a chance it is 62
#handwriting Lat / Long or perhaps elevation and a particular peak is written on the second label but I am unable to discern the details
#unclearabbreviation ???. McGuire
Just a thorax!
#no-collector
Looks like 53 to me.
Aw, the insect is falling apart. The label caught the leg.
#handwriting Russelman? Another collector?
#uncleardate probably 1915
No labels in the frame on this one
