  Strange date format. Assuming a date range of Oct. 14 - Oct. 23 in the year 1986

  That's correct. It means the specimen was collected in a trap between those dates. See the pop-up help for Begin Date.

  The pop-up doesn't give many examples for how ranged dates are usually formatted. This is the first time I've seen a comma used.

  Just use the two dates boxes, 14th Oct and 23rd Oct
