Notes From Nature Talk
Date worked in Chrome, though it didn't record the 5 records I transcribed against my Zooniverse account -- Records Done still says 0.
S.E. (From another collected on the same day) http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/cgi/eme_query?table=eme&bnhm_id=EMEC69507&one=T&OK2SHOWPRIVATE=
Love it when you can track down a confirming web page; http://www.priestlake.com/bigmap.html Distillery bay, Priest Lake
Placer County from other sample: http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/cgi/eme_query?table=eme&bnhm_id=EMEC331889&one=T&OK2SHOWPRIVATE=
I've always assumed that ones like these are pairs, with the other image in this case being the other side of paper w/more location details.
searching there for location contains art and collected by contains MacSwain shows 24 results, including several on July 10 at Artois.
Better to make an educated guess using google or finding others collected on same day: http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/query_specimens.html
at Carduus -- a type of thistle the insect was at.
Finally, after 1280 classifications across 4 collections, I finally get one on my birthday (2 year before I was born).
A good candidate for a FAQ. Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia, so quite a few have been collected at his home.
http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/labels/500000/EMEC503861 Bembix amoena.jpg
think it is Aug 1 1951. Check these other examples: http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/labels/500000/EMEC502910 Bembix americana comata.jpg
Agree. Leek Lodge was built in 1927, so hard to collect across from entrance before it exists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leek's_Lodge
http://goo.gl/maps/CV8Re
Probably just South. Challenge is that the Arroyo Mocho river 20 miles from Livermore is more to the SW.
#error - label is covered up
1954 - Here is another from same day: http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/cgi/eme_query?table=eme&bnhm_id=EMEC501365&one=T&OK2SHOWPRIVATE=
Fun one. State value was wrong (Cascade Head Exp Forest is in Oregon).
Might be C. W. Anderson who was there: http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/cgi/eme_query?table=eme&bnhm_id=EMEC304014&one=T&OK2SHOWPRIVATE=
If you rotate and flip image, you can read: 8-28- ... Beaver Dam? ... Marquette (which would be in Michigan)... Gregareous... Mixed woods
Think these ones are actually issues of picture pairs (like other collections have had). Other image probably of the other side of label.
yeah, I'd guess open too
Nice older record plus love interesting stories you come across when googling to confirm: http://207.112.105.217/PEN/1991-05/huggett.html
USA California, Lassen Country, Long Valley Creek, 5km W. Hallelujah Junction 15??m, 1-VIII-197?, Edward L Smith Col. ???? ??? ????
Mostly repeats what is on other labels: Daggett Cal, 7/24/63, 7-7:15 AM, Italian Squash
Bug is actually inside these 'envelopes'
Guess that it is Snelling since there was an R. R. Snelling collecting in this time frame
Notice the image label (dufourea boregonsis). That gives me the clue that the handwritting is likely a determined by label & can be skipped.
Yup, definitely don't need who determined (det) a classification, but the possible plant name (stenotopis) can be added in the notes.
It's not possible, but we don't need to worry about mistakes. Each object is reviewed by several people, so any one mistake averages out.
I'd go with Ash Mt. HQ. in local: http://wikimapia.org/6403877/Sequoia-National-Park-Ash-Mountain-Headquarters-complex
Fun seeing date from 1931, then seeing archaeological excavations here from 1926 through 1937.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uaxactun
I hike in the white mountains of NH, so know where this is. http://www.summitpost.org/cherry-mountain-mount-martha/150903
Yes, but Scotland is not a choice in the pull-down list of countries, so you have to select United Kingdom at the moment.
I set country to United Kingdom and county to Perth, and state/province to Scotland. Not sure if that is the correct thing for these.
Cool to see the note about the Shiras Expeditions and tie them to this sample: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vermilion,_Michigan
Think is Northern California:
http://www.biohere.com/natural_areas/california/Mendocino_County/northern_california_coast_range_.php
Col. (Collector): G. Luders, 8/28/57, California, Pied. > Piedmont http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_California
Collector is C. M. Dammers
I find this site helps: http://www.citypopulation.de/php/mexico-tamaulipas.php Luz del Campesino (Corona), Municipality: Güémez
Just wanted to confirm the nr (where some appear as Πr or n') are all abbreviations for near. Might be useful for a FAQ if this is common.
Nice. Just in time to start some Ornithological classification 😃
Obscured text
Most of the extra stuff like this I put in Habitat/Description, since that field can hold alot of information and common is a description
Probably 1947: http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/cgi/eme_query?table=eme&bnhm_id=EMEC58203&one=T&OK2SHOWPRIVATE=
Yes, probably north given this other sample on the same day http://essigdb.berkeley.edu/labels/510000/EMEC514431 Agapostemon nasutus.jpg
Yeah, ignore them. Even better determinations may have been made after what was on the label (which is why the image name can be different)
Guessing Belgrade in Montana in Gallatin country.
Santa Ynes Canyon in Los Angeles county
Hard to tell what is on second label -- la?ino
622 matches for Van Duzee on the essig database (Edward Payson Van Duzee)
No problem. It was mentioned that they were suppose to be image pairs. Does it help for us to put the #error tag on them as we see them?
#uncleardate might be August 9, 1909, August 04, 1904 or August 05, 1905
Just enough to identify: Big Bend National Park, Santa Elena Canyon (Brewster County, Texas, US)
#error - Label cut off
Big Bear Lake, CA Can't make out the right label though
It's also in Durango, though Querétaro comes up first in Google - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Juan_del_Río_Municipality,_Durango
You are correct, it no longer exists: http://www.teslacoalmines.org/Tesla.html
Several questionable points. Wellton probably the town in AZ, Yuma Country, Date probably Feb 8, 1939 (but brain wants to say 8/11/1939)
Sounds good. Not as many hashtag collections needed / showing up for this project as there have been on others.
Fun one, but found with the help of google. F. C. Whitehouse in Field, BC, Canada
#no-collector
#uncleardate - either 02, 12 or 22 plus Escalon is in San Joaquin County
Bruce's Camp is in Archuleta County in Colorado
#no-collector, but guessing P. A. Opler from another collected there on the same date in 1973.
Bicentennial Bug 😃
No #date
#no-collector but guessing R. F. Smith, since there are others on VIII 26 of 1952 in Hobart Mills from him.
Think this is a typo in the label. Lake George, Park Co, Colorado
Somebodies thumb 😃
#unclearlocation - label cut off in image
#error missing date and collector information
Is this Santa Cruz Island? Wiki article shows it has a central valley.
#error Missing everything but country and state
The town of Meadow valley is at 3,776 feet and in the mountains, so while I agree with the 4 and 5, it's probably 4000-5000
#error Another image that was suppose to be part of a pair
1998 or 1898? Minimal information makes me wonder if it is 1898
#error. Hard to Read other details besides location - Placer County, CA, 5km W. Emigrant Gap at Blue Cyn. Rd.
#error Can tell Country, State and County, but complete location and date of label (as well as specimen) is cut off
