Notes From Nature Talk

Dealing with labels that are faint, blurry, etc

  • am.zooni by am.zooni

For images that are faint or blurry, if you have the time and inclination, you could try using an image filter in your browser. There's at least one link to an image filter in the Useful Tools discussion. Or if you have MS Word or another word processor, you can save the image, drop it into a new document, and use the image correction tools to adjust the sharpness, contrast, brightness, etc.

Great suggestion and really appreciate your determination. Thanks!

Just a note that if it is really difficult to read you can always "skip" the specimen. If a specimen gets skipped a few times then we know that there is an obvious issue.

Even these tricks aren't always sufficient to get a clear view. Have a look at Image ANN00046of, which I just wrestled with, doing all I could with Word but I had to make an educated guess for some words (I'm pretty confident about those; experience with this collection and collector helped) and several characters and digits defeated me entirely.

That is a tough one for sure!
