Scientific author brackets

  • wickerwood by wickerwood

Not sure what the name/s in brackets are after the scientific name and before the author's surname is - is this part of the authors name?

    ie. (peopp. & Kunth) Lye

    thank you in advance.

It seems that the "Scientific Author" name is usually an abbreviation. This assumes that I am using the correct info as that name. If I am using he correct info, are these name usually abbreviated because there is a very limited number of duplicate names, thus there is no problem differentiating who the 'author' is/was? just wondering. 😉

The author in brackets was the first one to name the species. The author following it was the latest one to name it. Species may need to be renamed when better information becomes available. For instance, it might be decided that the species belongs in a different genus, and so the binomial name would have to change.
