I think this means the plant was intermittent along the spring, as opposed to frequent or abundant.

I think it means a spring that only flows intermittently. Agree that it's probably not a specific location but more of a habitat description

Could be a well known location at the time. Some springs come and go depending on the level of the underlying water table.

the link I listed talks about an intermittent spring in Rockingham Co. at a "Rockingham Farm" in the early 19th cent.
