What are the "G.N". and "n=" numbers on specimen labels?

Anyone know what the G.N. 52 (collector number perhaps?) and n=7 is? I've seen similar on older tags.
Here's another example and another. After seeing two without collector numbers I think I'll start transcribing the G.N. as the collector number if it doesn't have one elsewhere.

Great question! n refers to the number of chromosomes in a gamete. Ownbey did some chromosome work in Allium back in the 1970s.
I am not 100% sure about the G.N., but it may refer to the sample that was taken for the chromosome analysis. This is often given a separate number from the collector's number for the herbarium specimen.

Nice... thank you. :^) At least we can be sure about the n= being in the Habitat/Description then and perhaps we'll find out definitively about the G.N. eventually...
