Image copyright status

Just wondering - what is the copyright status of the images we classify? Would be great if they were freely licensed as they could be utilized with attribution and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and used on Wikipedia/Wikispecies etc. I'm holding fire until someone can give me good information on the copyright status though! Thanks 😃
