How to format sector references

  In many labels, I see what I think are some sort of sector references, but they are not consistently formatted. Sometimes S.4E, sometimes S 4E, sometimes S4E. Should I transcribe them exactly as I see them or should I massage them all to a single format, eg S4E?

  This is the Public Land Survey System (PLSS): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Land_Survey_System

  I usually transcribe them as I see them as there doesn't seem to be a standard format.
